Compositions

Guya

A strong and simple song for three voices named after the Canowindra fish fossil. “Guya” is “fish” in Wiradjuri, and Canowindra is an historic township in New South Wales. The present and the past are connected in this evidence of life transfixed in stone.

Eroded Hills

An a cappella SAB setting of a haunting and evocative poem written by Australian poet Judith Wright in 1953 that describes her intense connection to the land and the actions of her forebears.

If I Give You a Golden Comb

A collection of three-part choir arrangements of songs unearthed in the National Library of Australia’s Oral History and Folklore collection during my 2009-10 National Folk Fellowship. The songs are as diverse as the singers who sang them and each provides a little snapshot into a corner of Australian folklore. There are songs in English, Italian, and a Ukrainian song in translation. There is a mix of “trad” titles and songs written by well-known songwriters such as Dyan and Ronnie Summers and John Dengate.

Fiestaville Sings

Arrangements of songs as chosen by members of the Fiestaville Multicultural Choir. Each singer was invited to contribute a traditional song that was significant to them, and so we have songs in Arabic, Spanish, Tagalog, Italian, Macedonian, Ghanian, Serbian, Swedish, Mandarin, Mauritian French Creole, Japanese and Greek as well as from English-Speaking traditions. It also contains original songs, some of which were co-written by PP Cranney for various choir projects including Amulet.

The book, created in 2019, is beautifully designed by John Knowles and includes stunning portraits of choir members by award-winning Sydney Morning Herald photographer Janie Barrett.
